Dolgo Crab Apple
- *this tree will not attract deer during hunting season, it is a preseason attraction
- slow dropping starting August up until middle of September
- 1 inch diameter, uniquely very sweet flavored fruit
- heavy bearing, but reliably 100% biennial
- medium vigor (T2)
- this is a grafted tree onto full standard seedling rootstock
Do not believe the hype or reputation Dolgo crabapple has as a hunting tree, the reality is that it isn't a good one for this purpose. However, Dolgo is an extremely disease resistant tree that bears a large crop every other year with a long drop from August into the middle of September. The pics of these Dolgo are from my property in Maine (zone 5a) taken on October 9th. As you can see, the majority have dropped but a few are still hanging. The tree has an average growth rate but slower compared to the other varieties I sell. Despite all this, what I like about this tree is that it grows steadily into a large tree that pumps out a huge crop of fruit every other year. You only need one of these trees, in six years it will be pumping out so much fruit you will be glad you chose one for your property.
*This is a grafted tree on full standard seedling apple rootstock, chosen specifically to grow the tree as fast and large as possible. If there was a more vigorous rootstock out there, I would use it.
